Took a shortcut on the JMT because a guy at REI swore it was faster

Met a hiker in Lone Pine who told me to skip the trail up to Muir Pass and go cross-country over the ridge instead. That detour added 3 miles of loose scree climbing and I lost half a day getting back on route. Anybody else get burned by advice from a random stranger at a gear shop?

Used to think gear shop employees knew their stuff from experience, but getting sent up a scree field that nearly killed my knees changed my mind real quick.

Whoa, that's rough. Honestly though, maybe the employee just assumed you were young and indestructible like they were when they first started, forgetting that advice like that ages about as well as their knees probably have by now.
