The day a squirrel stole my entire bag of trail mix on the Lost Coast Trail
We were about 15 miles into the hike, taking a break on a big rock near Shelter Cove. I set my food bag down for maybe 30 seconds to grab some water. This little brown squirrel just ran up, grabbed the whole Ziploc bag (a full pound of my good stuff), and dragged it into the brush. My friend just pointed and said, 'Well, he's eating better than we are tonight.' Has anyone else had a bold animal completely hijack their lunch plans on a trail?

I mean, that "he's eating better than we are" line is so true. I read a whole article once about how animals on popular trails totally lose their fear of people because they get used to free food. It's not just being bold, it's like they've learned to see hikers as walking snack dispensers. Maybe it's just me but that makes it feel more like a planned heist than a random animal thing. That squirrel had probably been watching people from the bushes all season. Kind of ruins it when you realize you're just part of the food delivery system.

Yeah, that really does take the magic out of it.
