Question about the trail conditions on the High Sierra Trail near Hamilton Lake

I hiked the section from Bearpaw Meadow to Hamilton Lake last weekend. The trail was in good shape, but I noticed a lot of fresh bear scat about two miles past the ranger station. It was right on the path, and I saw some claw marks on a tree nearby. Has anyone else come across this recently? I'm planning to go back next month and want to know if I should bring extra bear spray.
