My filter clogged up in the Sierra Nevada and I nearly ran out of water

I was hiking the JMT section near Evolution Valley last summer and my sawyer squeeze got totally clogged with silt after crossing a muddy creek. I didn't bring a backup and spent like 2 hours trying to backflush it with a dirty water bottle. That was a dumb move because I was already low on water and the sun was baking me. Now I carry a spare filter and a bandana to pre-filter any murky water before it hits the main one. Anyone else had a filter fail at a bad time and how did you handle it?

Yeah and @cora_jenkins I got stuck filtering through a smartwater bottle with a hole in it once, total nightmare.

Started carrying a second filter after my squeeze clogged in the Sierra too.
