Lost $300 on a shortcut trail that didn't exist

Found this route on a forum that claimed a 6 mile cutoff on the AT in Virginia. Spent a whole day bushwhacking through terrain that was basically a swamp. Had to backtrack 8 miles in the dark. Has anyone else run into fake routes posted by people who clearly never hiked them?

Guess that trail was more of a wet dream than a shortcut.

Buddy of mine followed a "shortcut" in Maine and ended up on a private property with a shotgun.
