I finally had a perfect day on the Appalachian Trail last fall and it felt like a dream

It was a Tuesday in October near Roan Mountain, Tennessee. The leaves were peaking with oranges and reds, and I only did 8 miles because I stopped every hour to just stare. I found this hidden campsite by a stream with no one else around for miles. What made it so special? Has anyone else had a day where everything just clicked like that?

8 miles with that many stops is the actual secret to a perfect hiking day.

Oh absolutely, "perfect hiking day" is right. I did a 7 mile loop last fall with about 4 or 5 stops thrown in, one was a long lunch by a creek. It made the whole thing feel more like a series of mini adventures instead of just grinding out miles. My feet thanked me for those breaks too, not gonna lie.
