I finally got my permit for the Enchantments and it was a disaster from the start

My buddy and I hiked up to Colchuck Lake, and a mountain goat ate half my pack's hip belt while I was filtering water. We had to MacGyver a repair with some paracord and a carabiner, which made the whole descent super awkward. Anyone else have a trail animal completely sabotage their gear?

Mountain goats up there are basically furry vandals. In my experience, you can't leave a pack unattended for a second, even to get water. Salt from sweat makes the straps a target. I started keeping my pack on my back during quick stops, or I put it between my legs. A carabiner and cord is a solid field fix, but that had to be a miserable hike out.

Honestly that sounds a bit over the top, anna_grant. Those goats are usually just curious, not out to ruin your trip. I've left my pack alone plenty of times without it getting chewed. Maybe you just had some bad luck with a particularly bold one.
