Finally hit 300 trail miles this season and it snuck up on me

I was checking my GPS logs this morning and saw I crossed 300 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail section near Mount Whitney. That's about 15 miles a week since April, which is nothing crazy for some folks but way more than I've ever done. I remember reading a comment from someone last year who said "the trail doesn't care about your pace, it just adds up" and that really stuck with me. My knees are a little creaky and I need new insoles for sure, but I'm proud I stuck with it through the hot days. Has anyone else had a mileage goal sneak up on them like that?

Yeah, have you tried breaking it into smaller chunks instead of thinking about the big number? I started doing 10 mile weeks and then bumped it up a little each month, barely noticing when I hit 500. Before you know it your legs just get used to the rhythm and the miles pile up.

Honestly, the knees thing is real. I was out on the Appalachian Trail last month and my left knee started making this clicking sound like a bad car engine, and I just pretended I didn't hear it for another 12 miles. My husband calls it my "old lady hiking gear." But yeah, the smaller chunk thing is so true. I started with 5 mile loops near my house and before I knew it, I was doing 12 miles without really planning it. The mileage just kind of creeps up on you like a quiet tax you forgot you owed.
