Used to chase antenna nulls with a handheld meter, now I just use the aircraft's own VSWR readout
Back in 2014 at a regional outfit in Boise, I would drag a Bird meter and a 50 ohm dummy load up a ladder for every VOR antenna swap. Took me 45 minutes a pop, and I still got called back twice for bad readings on the flight deck. Then a senior guy showed me that the Collins radio can do a built in test that shows reflected power right on the display. Now I do the same check in 5 minutes, no ladder, no dummy load. The only thing that changed was trusting the software and reading the manual page 27. Has anyone else dumped their old test gear for the aircraft's own diagnostics on things like this?
