Used a cheap heat gun on a pitot tube and it read 40 knots on the ground
I was chasing a flaky pitot heat check on a Cessna 172 at a ramp in Fresno and grabbed a $25 heat gun from the hardware store instead of the proper test box. Pointed it at the tube for maybe 10 seconds and the airspeed indicator woke up and climbed to 40 knots while the plane was parked, which gave the line guy a good laugh. Turns out I was cooking the probe housing way hotter than the real heating element ever would. What do you all use for a quick heat check without hauling out the full test set?
