Got into a debate with a mechanic over wire routing

We were installing a new transponder and he wanted to run cables near hydraulic lines. I argued it's a bad idea due to interference and potential damage. What's your rule of thumb for keeping avionics safe from other systems?

On older Piper models, hydraulic lines and avionics cables often share the same conduit for simplicity. Mechanics know that modern shielding makes the six-inch rule more of a guideline than a hard law. If it passed post-installation checks, the risk is probably overstated.

AC 43.13-1B calls for 6 inches of separation. Did the mechanic have a reason to ignore that?
