Can we talk about how a $4 wiring harness boot almost cost me a plane on the ramp at Tulsa
Last Tuesday I was doing a routine pitot static check on a King Air at Tulsa Riverside and kept getting a 200 foot altitude error that wouldn't clear no matter how many times I reseated the static lines. Everyone in the shop kept telling me to just recalibrate the test set and move on, but I pulled the left static port boot and found a pinhole crack letting in ram air at ramp speeds. I swapped the boot for a new one, ran the leak check again, and the error dropped to zero, which means the test set was fine the entire time and the 3 guys who told me to skip it were chasing ghosts. My point is we blame the gear way too fast when the cheap rubber is usually the real bad guy. How do you all handle the guy who tells you the box is broken before you've even looked at the plumbing?
