A line from a DCM pilot in Denver made me redo my crimps

Had an avionics lead tell me my D-sub crimps looked fine but felt wrong. He watched me use the cheap ratcheting tool from my starter kit and said, "If the release force is under 5 pounds, you're just making a handshake, not a connection." Pulled out his calibration gauge and showed me 3 out of my 10 pins failed the pull test. Swapped to a nicer crimper and now I re-test every batch of 25, and I've caught two bad ones already. Anyone else had a shop standard that sounded picky but saved your butt later?

Bet that gauge costs more than my whole toolbox, but whatever works.
