Showerthought: a guy at the NAPA in Reno asked why I torque my lugs in a star pattern, and now I do it every time
I always just went around in a circle because it felt faster, but he said the star pattern keeps the wheel from sitting crooked, and after he showed me his rotor with uneven wear from doing it my way, I did all four wheels over again in the driveway that same night.
Had a tire shop guy show me the same thing years back using a spare and two fingers on the hub. Watched a guy at a track day snap a stud because he went around in one pass instead of sneaking up on the torque in steps. Star pattern and a couple passes takes maybe an extra minute total.
