Unpopular opinion: paying $1,100 to ship a Civic from Phoenix taught me more than any quote site ever did
Three years back I had a 2009 Civic that needed to get from Phoenix to my brother in Seattle, and I did the whole online quote thing where 14 brokers called me inside two hours. I picked the middle price at $1,100 and the driver showed up six days late in a beat up rig with a broken ramp, then asked me for $80 cash on top for "fuel." My brother says the car arrived fine but with 40 extra miles on it and a In-N-Out wrapper in the back seat. So my real question for you all: when you compare carriers, do you care more about the price or how fast they actually pick up, because I clearly picked wrong on both.
The extra 40 miles thing is what gets me. That driver wasn't just late, he was using your car to run errands. I've heard of guys doing this, picking up a car and treating it like a free rental for the week, hitting drive-thrus, visiting a girlfriend two towns over, whatever. The $80 "fuel" thing is the tell too, because if the rate was locked in, that cash is going straight in his pocket and there's nothing you can do once your car is on his rig. What I'd want to know is how you even go after someone for that, because most of these brokers just connect you to a random carrier and then wash their hands of it. The pickup window matters way more than people admit, since a carrier who shows up when they say usually runs a tighter operation overall.
