Hot take: the dispatcher at the Dallas terminal last Tuesday quoted me $650 more than the broker did for the same open trailer
I was standing right there when he printed both sheets and the pickup window was 2 days apart, so it wasn't a timing thing. Has anyone else gotten two prices that far apart for the same route?
The weird part nobody talks about is who actually owns the trailer in those two quotes. Brokers pull from a board where carriers post capacity, so a lot of those numbers are just whatever another carrier is hoping to get that week. Terminal dispatchers are quoting off their own fleet or a contract rate they already locked in months ago. So you are not even comparing the same trailer half the time, you are comparing a spot price to a contract price. Two days apart usually means one quote expired or a load got covered and the rate jumped. If you still have both sheets, check the carrier name and MC on each one, that will tell you fast if it was ever the same truck.
