My uncle said skip the dealer clear coat, 3 winters in Buffalo later I owe him $200
I bought a new truck in 2022 and my uncle, who spent 30 years doing body work outside Rochester, told me not to pay the $1,400 the dealer wanted for their paint protection package. He said just keep it waxed and park it smart, that the add-on was mostly profit. I did what he said and spent maybe $60 on wax and sealant instead. Three Buffalo winters later, including that January with the road salt, my paint still beads water and I have zero rust spots on the rockers. My buddy bought the same truck the same week, paid for the dealer package, and his hood already has swirl marks from their applicator. So I guess my question is, has anyone here sprung for the dealer coating and felt like it was worth the money?
Did your uncle ever talk about how the dealer stuff gets put on at the shop? I ask because I watched a guy at a body shop near me do those coatings for a while, and half the time it was some kid in the back with a buffer who had been on the job two weeks. The product itself is fine, it's the hands it passes through that get you. My brother in law pays for every add on they dangle at him, and his last two cars both came home with little marks under the lights. Some of that stuff is worth it, but you have to know who is holding the tool.
