That moment when a seized caliper bolt finally broke free after 45 minutes of kroil and heat

I was working on a 2010 F-150 at the shop in Cleveland yesterday and the lower caliper bracket bolt wouldn't budge at all. After soaking it in Kroil for 20 minutes and hitting it with a MAP torch for another 10, it finally snapped loose with a half-inch breaker bar. Has anyone else found a trick that works better than heat and penetrating oil for rusted brake hardware?

Man, 45 minutes on one bolt sounds like overkill to me. I've had good luck just using a good penetrating oil like PB Blaster and a long breaker bar, usually pops them loose in 10-15 minutes tops. Might be worth trying a different penetrant or a better quality 6-point socket before you break out the torch next time.

Ha, fair enough but I gotta push back a little. PB Blaster is good stuff, no doubt, but it's not magic for everything. Some bolts, especially factory ones that have been heat cycled a hundred times, just get a death grip on the threads. Also, a long breaker bar can actually snap a bolt easier if it's really stuck, which is way worse than spending time with heat. I've been there with the 45 minute torch job too and sometimes it's the only way to get the job done without drilling and tapping. Not saying you're wrong, just that every situation is different.
