Talking to my dad about carburetors made me miss the old days

He was showing me his '78 Ford's engine and said, 'You could fix this with a screwdriver and a prayer.' Now I'm staring at a laptop to change a thermostat. Anyone else feel like we're more computer techs than mechanics sometimes?

Totally get that. It feels like half the battle now is just talking to the car through a scanner. You're not even fixing the part, you're just resetting the computer that told the part to break.

That '78 Ford comment hits home. My uncle's old Chevy had points and condenser you could actually see and adjust. When you diagnose a modern car, what percentage of the job is just figuring out which computer module is throwing the bad data?
