Spent $160 on a cheap timing light kit, returned it within a week

I've been doing engine work for like 15 years and always used my old school timing light that my uncle gave me. It still worked but the leads were shot and I figured I'd treat myself to one of those digital advance timing lights on Amazon. Big mistake. The plastic housing cracked just from normal use, and the inductive clamp gave false readings on my buddy's 5.3 Chevy. Took it back after 7 days and grabbed a used Snap-On from a local tool truck guy for $90. That thing has been solid for 3 months now. Anyone else got burned buying budget timing equipment lately?

Thing is, a $160 kit ain't exactly "budget" in my book, but I get what you're saying about the cheap stuff. That digital advance reading on the 5.3 might've been user error though, those things need a steady trigger signal or they'll lie to ya.
