Pro tip: that click you hear when you torque a bolt is your wrench telling you the truth, and I finally looked up why
I was reading an old shop manual a guy gave me when he retired, and it had a chart on torque wrench accuracy that caught me off guard. Turns out a click type wrench can be off by 4 percent at the top of its range but way more, like 20 percent, down near the bottom of the scale. So all those small 10 ft lb valve cover bolts I used to grab the big half inch wrench for? I was probably over tightening half of them. I found this out on a Tuesday while cleaning out the bottom drawer of my box, and it made me think about every pan gasket I ever blamed on a bad part. Been using a small inch pound wrench for the little stuff ever since and my leak comebacks dropped a lot. Anyone else got a torque story where the tool was the problem, not the gasket?
