Old timer at the parts counter changed how I look at torque specs

So I was picking up a water pump for a 5.3 Chevy yesterday and this retired diesel mechanic, must've been 75, was in line ahead of me. He was getting gaskets for an old Duramax and the kid behind the counter asked him if he wanted the torque spec sheet printed out. The old guy just laughed and said 'son, I've been turning wrenches since before you were born, I know what 30 ft-lbs feels like in my elbow.' I chuckled but then he turned to me and said 'but you young guys, you trust the book too much. The book don't know when a bolt has been heat cycled 200 times or if the previous guy used Loctite. Feel the bolt stretch, that's the real spec.' I've been doing this 12 years and always follow the book to the letter. But he's got a point, I've seen plenty of warped heads and broken bolts from guys going over spec just because the book said one thing. Anyone else had a moment where some old head said something that actually stuck with you?
