Had to choose between a $80 Harbor Freight scanner and a $2,000 Snap-on one for a job last Thursday

I was diagnosing a 2018 F-150 that kept throwing a weird misfire code. My old cheap scanner couldn't read the live data fast enough, and the Snap-on truck was parked nearby. I went with the expensive one because the customer needed it done by noon, and honestly it paid off in 20 minutes. Found a bad injector that the cheap tool would've missed. Anyone else have a moment where spending big saved your butt on a tricky diag?

had a buddy who bought a cheap torque wrench to save $40 and ended up with lugs so tight he snapped two studs on his civic on the side of I-5. the tow and parts cost him like triple what the good wrench woulda been, and he still talks about it every time we're in the garage.

The cheap tool thing only works until the cheap tool is the thing between you and a hospital visit. Nobody factors in the cost of your own time and pain when they add up the savings. A $20 wrench that slips once and busts your knuckle open is suddenly a $200 trip to urgent care. The real lesson isn't about tools at all, it's about knowing which jobs can go sideways fast. Save money on stuff that won't kill you, spend on stuff that might.
