A customer's story about their old truck made me rethink how I talk to people

I was working on a '92 F-150 in the bay last week, and the owner started telling me about all the road trips he took in it with his dad. I was about to just give him the repair estimate, but I listened instead. How do you balance being efficient with taking a minute to hear people out when they're attached to their car?

Totally get that about the road trips story. I had a guy tell me about his first date in his beater civic once, and honestly that extra minute just makes the whole job feel more human.

Those little stories are the best part of any day. It's like you get a tiny window into someone's whole life for a second. Makes everything feel less like a transaction and more like a real chat. We should all slow down for that stuff more often.
