Why does nobody talk about the right way to clean a sanding block?

I saw a guy at the shop next door throw his whole block in the solvent tank after a big job, and it just turned to mush. I've been using a stiff brush and a quick wipe with a clean rag for years, and my blocks last way longer. What's your go-to method for keeping them clean without wrecking them?

Man, that solvent tank story is a horror show. Your brush and rag method is basically what I do, but I'm curious about the grit. Are you cleaning off the same type of sanding dust every time, or does it change? Like, cleaning drywall dust out of a block feels totally different than cleaning up after wet-sanding some primer, you know?
