Tried a stud welder for the first time last Tuesday, shocked at the result
I've been doing dent repair for 9 years with a slide hammer and I always figured those cheap stud welders were gimmicks. My coworker lent me his and I practiced on an old Ford F-150 tailgate from the junkyard in Tulsa. That thing pulled a crease out clean in maybe 20 minutes that would've taken me an hour plus filler. I still think the cheap ones are risky on thin panels, but I'm rethinking my whole kit. Anyone else switch late in their career and regret not doing it sooner?

Man, I gotta push back on this one. That tailgate was probably good metal, but half the stuff rolling into shops now is crazy thin and a stud welder will blow right through it or warp the panel before you even get the slide hammer on it. Plus you've got nine years of feel built into your hands with a hammer, that doesn't just transfer over to a welder overnight. Give it six months of real jobs before you ditch the old setup.
