Masking tape residue is not paint failure, I feel dumb

Did a rear quarter repaint on a 2018 Civic last Tuesday and the customer came back furious about white streaks under the clear. I was ready to blame the sealer or my gun settings, the whole time I was convinced it was a chemical reaction. Turns out I left the cheap 3M masking tape on for 48 hours in a hot shop and the adhesive baked into the base coat. A buddy from a shop in Phoenix told me he only uses the blue high-temp tape for any job that sits overnight. I checked with a solvent wipe and it came right off, so no repaint needed. That was a 3 hour scare over something I could have avoided for 8 bucks more on tape. Anyone else had tape ghosting get blamed on paint quality?

Man, I get why you felt dumb but I actually see it different. Tape ghosting is a real thing but it's not paint failure, it's a process failure, and those are way easier to fix than a bad base coat or sealer issue. You caught it, cleaned it, and moved on, so that's a win, not a loss.
