Shoutout to the guy who fixed my AC for $50 instead of $400
My AC went out last Tuesday during that 95 degree heatwave we had in Decatur. I called three big HVAC companies and they all quoted me $350-$450 just to come look at it. I was about to cave when my neighbor mentioned a guy named Carlos who does side work. He came by Thursday afternoon, spent 20 minutes cleaning the condenser coils and replacing a capacitor. Charged me $50 cash and the AC has been blowing ice cold since. It took me three days of calling around and stressing out over nothing. Has anyone else found a random local handyman who saved them a ton of money?

Good for you but I gotta be that guy. That capacitor replacement alone is a legit safety hazard if you don't know what you're doing. Those things can hold a charge and shock you pretty bad. Also $50 cash means no receipt, no warranty if something goes wrong next week, and no permit if your house ever catches fire and insurance finds out who worked on it. Not trying to hate on Carlos but those big companies have overhead for a reason. They carry insurance, do background checks on their techs, and have to pay for trucks and parts. The whole "I saved money" thing feels great until something goes sideways and you're stuck paying double to fix it.

Honestly the safety thing gets overblown. You can short a cap with a screwdriver in two seconds, it's not rocket science. And half those big companies send guys who barely know what they're doing anyway, they just charge you for the privilege.
