Plumber walked out mid-job and left me with a flooded basement in Buckhead

I hired a guy named Marcus from a local ad to fix a leak under my sink last Tuesday and he took off after taking the pipe apart, saying he'd be back in an hour with parts. Four hours later the whole line burst and I had water everywhere, had to call an emergency service that cost me $850 to shut it off. Learned the hard way to always check for a business license and insurance first, you know? Anyone else have a contractor just bail on them like that?

Hold up real quick though. I gotta say something about the business license part. In Georgia, a plumbing contractor doesn't technically need a state business license to do small residential work like replacing pipes under a sink. They do need a state plumbing license from the State Licensing Board if they're doing anything major, but handyman style jobs can be a gray area. The real thing you gotta check is if they carry liability insurance and workers comp. That emergency call you had to make, that's the real kicker. I'm sorry that happened to you man, but the lesson is more about insurance than a business license in most cases around here.

But hold on, how do you even make sure a plumber has workers comp and liability insurance when you're in a panic and water's spraying everywhere? I've tried asking people for proof before and they just get all offended or say they'll bring it later but never do. Is there like a quick way to look that up on your phone while you're standing in a puddle or are you just supposed to trust their word until something goes wrong?
