Dekalb County water meter advice from a plumber I barely knew
Back in 2018 my water bill jumped to like $340 for a regular month and I was about to call some big plumbing company. A guy I knew from the hardware store, just a random plumber picking up parts, told me to check the meter lid for a small leak first. He said most people waste money on pipe inspections when the real issue is the meter box seal or the little valve right there. I went out at night with a flashlight and heard that faint hissing sound, turned out the shutoff valve had a tiny drip. Tightened it with a wrench and my next bill dropped to $87. That advice saved me at least $400 compared to what the company quoted me for a 'diagnostic visit.' Has anyone else gotten good tips from someone you just met at a store instead of a paid pro?
Check the meter lid first, that's solid advice. But how did you know to look at the valve versus the seal around the box itself? I had a similar thing happen where the hissing was coming from the meter body gasket and not the shutoff, and I wasted a whole weekend tightening stuff that wasn't the problem. Was the drip pretty obvious once you got down there with the flashlight, or did you have to feel around for moisture? Also curious if your water company ever gave you a credit back for the spike, because mine basically told me tough luck when I tried.
