Tried that new HVAC zoning system for our 1920s bungalow...

We spent $2,800 on a dual zone setup for our old house in Decatur. The upstairs was always freezing while the downstairs felt like a sauna. Well, the contractor installed it and now the downstairs never gets cool enough because the ductwork is so old and leaky. I learned you really gotta check your existing ducts before throwing money at fancy zone controllers. Has anybody else dealt with old house HVAC problems like this?

Blame the old ductwork all you want but I bet that system works fine for someone who actually sealed and insulated their attic first. My buddy put zones in his craftsman and it works great because he patched the gaps and wrapped the ducts in the crawlspace. Sometimes you get what you pay for and $2,800 is cheap for a proper job with duct assessment included.
