My water bill hit $180 last month and I finally found the leak

I live in a 1950s bungalow in East Atlanta and my bill is usually around $50. I checked the meter while nothing was running and the little red triangle was spinning like crazy. It turned out to be a slow drip from the toilet fill valve that had been going for weeks. Has anyone else had a sneaky leak that cost them a bunch before they caught it?

My neighbor had a similar thing happen with a leaky outdoor spigot. It was behind some bushes so nobody noticed until their grass got swampy. The water company said it was running for months, and their bill was over three hundred dollars. Those slow drips really add up when you aren't looking for them.

My hot water heater had a tiny crack in the drain valve last spring. The plumber showed me it was leaking a cup an hour, which ran my bill up to $130 before I saw the puddle. How did you finally spot yours?
