Last week I told someone their HOA was overstepping and got schooled
I was complaining to my neighbor about the HOA fining him $150 for an unpainted mailbox post, but he said they actually saved him from a bigger headache when the post rotted out later. Made me realize I've been ignoring the upkeep side of those rules. Has anyone else had the HOA do something that ended up helping you?

You mentioned the HOA fining him for an "unpainted mailbox post" and how it saved him from a bigger headache later... but that's not exactly what happened here. The fine was for not keeping it painted, which is about looks, not about the post being rotten. A painted post doesn't stop rot from happening inside. What really saved him was the HOA making him pay attention to the post at all, so he noticed it was getting bad. The fine itself didn't do anything to fix the rot, it just forced him to look at the post more closely. So it's more like the HOA's rule got him to check it, not that the fine saved him.
