Hot take: letting your lawn go dormant during July isn't lazy, it's smart.
My neighbor two doors down in East Atlanta started watering every single day last month when ours turned brown, and she's already complaining about a $200 water bill. Meanwhile my grass popped right back green after that rain last week, no extra cost. Anyone else just let nature handle the summer heat?

Wow, six weeks bone dry? I figured dormant grass could ride out a whole summer without any help. That's brutal that a whole patch just died on you. Did it look any different before it gave out, or did it just not wake up one day? I guess I've been lucky here in the Atlanta area where we usually catch a storm every couple weeks. I'll actually have to keep an eye on the forecast now instead of just assuming it'll bounce back.

Well actually, letting it go fully dormant isn't exactly the same as just not watering. Dormant grass stops growing and turns brown to save energy, but it's still alive if it gets an occasional inch of rain every few weeks. The issue is if you hit a real drought stretch over a month without any moisture, the roots can start dying off. I had a patch that didn't bounce back one year because we went six weeks bone dry and I figured it was fine. So it's smart, but you still gotta keep an eye on it if the dry spell goes too long.
