Going against the grain on those 'instant' lawn services

Everyone in my Grant Park neighborhood swears by the liquid aeration and overseeding trucks, but after paying $350 last fall, my Bermuda just came back patchier. I think the soil got too compacted from the heavy equipment. Has anyone else had better luck with just doing it yourself with a core aerator?

Learned that lesson the hard way too, now my lawn looks like a bad haircut I gave myself.

Oh man, I have to disagree there. A bad lawn cut is way better than letting it get too long. When you cut down tall grass, it shocks the plant and turns the tips brown. A slightly uneven short cut stays green and just looks a little messy for a few days. The real mistake is waiting until it's a jungle and then taking off too much at once.
