Fought with my old AC unit for 2 years til I switched to a heat pump last August
Honestly I spent like $600 a month in peak summer with my 15 year old unit cooling my 3 bedroom ranch in East Atlanta. Ngl I thought heat pumps were just a gimmick but my neighbor convinced me to get a quote. The new one cost $4,200 installed and my power bill dropped to $220 in July. I compared the SEER ratings after and the difference was 10 vs 18 which explains everything. Has anyone else made the switch and seen savings like that?

$220 in July in Atlanta sounds about right. But just so you know, SEER 18 on a heat pump is actually pretty decent for cooling, but heat pumps are more about HSPF for heating performance. If you barely use heat in Georgia it's fine though.

Agree with nina but nobody's talking about how a heat pump actually works way better in atlanta humidity than a standard ac. My old unit would run and run but never really pull the moisture out so my house felt sticky even at 72 degrees. The heat pump dehumidifies like crazy because it runs longer cycles at lower speeds compared to the old clunker that just blasted cold air then shut off. That alone made the switch worth it to me, the comfort level is just completely different.
