Why does nobody talk about learning astrophotography before auto-guiders were a thing?

Man @diana_hayes you really nailed it with the phone numbers and paper maps comparison. It's true that a lot of that hard earned skill just fades away when tech makes things smooth. I kinda miss the raw determination it took to get a single decent shot back then, even if it means fewer people pick it up now.

Isn't it wild how every time tech makes something easier, we totally forget how hard it used to be? It happens with everything now, like remembering phone numbers or reading a paper map. Back then you had to actually know how to star hop and manually guide for like an hour, it was a whole skill that just got erased lol. Feels like we lose the shared struggle that used to connect people in a hobby.

But do you think maybe that lost struggle also kept the hobby smaller because fewer people could get past the hard parts? Like did we trade deeper bonds for way more people being able to join in?
