TIL the sky over Great Basin National Park last Saturday showed more stars than my Bortle 2 chart promised, and now I can't decide who to trust
I drove 4 hours out to Great Basin last Saturday with my 8 inch dob and a printed light pollution chart that rates the area as Bortle 2. When I got there the Milky Way was so bright it cast a faint shadow on my car hood, way better than the chart claimed, and a guy parked next to me argued it was just a good transparency night, not the true sky quality. So here is the debate: do you trust the published Bortle maps or your own eyes on the night, and which one has burned you worse?
