My tripod leg gave out right as the Milky Way core was rising over Joshua Tree
Was out there last month, trying to get a 30 second exposure of the galactic center. Heard a snap and the whole rig tilted. Had to prop the camera on my backpack for the rest of the night. Anyone have a good, sturdy tripod brand they trust for long exposures?

My old Manfrotto finally gave out too, so I switched to a Really Right Stuff tripod and it's been solid.

My Manfrotto 055 has been through ten years of abuse and still works perfectly. I've seen a few RRS legs fail at the hinge points under heavy wind loads. For me, the cost difference isn't worth it when the older Italian stuff just won't quit.
