My tracking mount gave out during a 3-hour deep sky session last night
About halfway through stacking 90-second exposures of the Andromeda Galaxy, the motor just seized up and ruined the whole set, so now I'm looking at buying a used Sky-Watcher HEQ5 on Craigslist - has anyone else dealt with sudden mount failures mid-shoot?

...and that's exactly what happened to my buddy Mark during a star party. He had his Celestron AVX tracking the Veil Nebula for maybe 45 minutes and then the motor just made this grinding noise and stopped. Right in the middle of a 90 second exposure, the whole mount started shaking. He was so mad he almost threw it in the trash. He ended up taking it apart later and found a gear inside had stripped, so he had to order a whole new worm gear assembly from some site in Poland. The used HEQ5 is a solid choice if you can find one that's been well taken care of.
