My neighbor told me my moon photo looked like a smudge, and now I can't unsee it
So I've been messing around with my cheap 70-300mm lens and a tripod in the backyard for about 8 months now. Last Tuesday my neighbor Dave walked over while I was trying to stack shots of the moon on my laptop on the patio. He looked at the screen for a second and said, "That just looks like a smudge on a window." I laughed it off, but then I zoomed in and honestly he was kind of right. I had been chasing a 3 hour stack of 200 frames and calling it sharp when the thing was mush. The next night I tried again, and this time I dropped to 1/125 and got a single frame where the craters actually had edges. It was not as pretty as my stacked version. But it was real. Now I'm wondering how many of my "good" shots were just noise I talked myself into. Anyone else have a non-astronomy friend say something that ruined a whole batch of your pics?
