I finally drove out to the Joshua Tree dark sky zone last weekend

Honestly, I always thought you needed a huge telescope to see anything good. But just lying on a blanket, I could see the Milky Way's core so clearly, like a dusty cloud across the whole sky. Has anyone else been surprised by what you can see with just your eyes from a truly dark spot?

Yeah, that "dusty cloud" thing is exactly it. I mean, we're so used to seeing everything through a screen or with some tech in between, it's wild what you can actually just... see. Makes you wonder what else we're missing right in front of us.

Reminds me of my friend who finally looked up at the night sky during a power outage last summer. He'd lived in that house for ten years and never really saw the stars because of the streetlights. He was totally blown away by the Milky Way just sitting there the whole time. Said it felt like a secret he'd been missing. Makes you want to just turn everything off and stare at the walls sometimes, see what's actually there.
