Had to pick between a cheap $200 telescope and a decent pair of binoculars for my first real look at the night sky. Went with the binos and honestly it was the right call.
I was at a local astro meetup last month and these two guys kept arguing about what to start with. One dude swore by his $200 refractor that gave him nothing but blurry jupiter. The other guy had these 15x70 binocs and pointed out the andromeda galaxy clear as day. I bought the same binocs for $150 on amazon. Already spotted saturn's rings and some star clusters from my backyard. Has anyone else found binos beat budget telescopes for starting out?

You mentioned "the andromeda galaxy clear as day" with those 15x70 binocs and honestly that changed my mind completely. I used to think a real telescope was the only way to go for astronomy, figured binos were just for birds or sports. But after struggling with a cheap scope that gave me nothing but blurry blobs I finally tried some 10x50s and saw the moon's craters and even some of jupiter's moons. It really made me realize a solid pair of binoculars gives you way more usable views for the same money, especially when you're just starting out.

Used to be one of those guys who thought telescopes were the only real way to look at stars. Then a friend handed me his 10x50s on a clear night and I saw the Orion Nebula as a fuzzy cloud, way better than the blurry mess from my cheap scope. Completely flipped my mind on budget gear for beginners.
