Appreciation post: My galaxy photo's color dilemma
Last week, I was editing a photo of the Whirlpool Galaxy and made the blues and reds pop way more. It looked fantastic, but I started wondering if I was being honest about what's up there. I spent an hour debating with myself, which is pretty silly for a hobby. In my experience, a little enhancement is fine, but I added a note saying it was edited. Your mileage may vary on how much editing is okay.

Our own eyes are terrible at seeing color in dim light. Every single astrophoto is already a massive translation from what the sensor captures to what we can see. The real question is whether your edit helps share the WOW of the object, not if it matches a reality our biology can't even perceive.

The_adam totally nailed it. I spent a whole night last week cranking up the colors on Orion and felt guilty too. Got over it quick though. Our eyeballs are useless in the dark anyway.
