Why does nobody talk about how slow it is to sort a bag of pot shards by type?
I volunteered at a dig outside Tucson in March and got handed a tray of about 400 sherds to sort into plain ware, decorated, and rim pieces. I figured it would take maybe two hours, but matching slip color and thickness without breaking anything stretched it to almost seven hours over two days. The lab director kept telling me to slow down, and she was right, because I had three cooking pot rims misfiled in the decorated pile. So how do you all get faster at this without guessing? Do you sort by feel first or run everything under the lamp?
