Warning: Don't buy those cheap Roman coin lots on eBay

I wasted $85 on a grab bag of uncleaned Roman coins thinking I'd find something rare. All 40 coins were so corroded you couldn't even see a face on any of them. Has anyone actually gotten a good find from those mystery lots?

I used to think differently about these coin lots, but I learned my lesson the hard way too. I bought a 'uncleaned Roman coin' lot for $60 a few years back, convinced I'd at least get a few decent ones. Instead, every single coin was so crusted over and pitted that nothing was visible, not even a hairline or a letter. One had a faint outline that might have been a profile, but it could have just been a scratch. So I'm right there with you, it's not worth the gamble unless you enjoy soaking green flakes off metal for weeks.
