Took me 3 hours to realize I was digging in the wrong spot at a site near Flagstaff
I spent a whole afternoon trying to uncover what I thought was a buried wall, but turns out I was 15 feet off from the actual foundation. The crew leader finally walked over and said 'you're following a root line, not a wall' and I felt like an idiot. Has anyone else wasted a whole day on a false lead like that?

I once spent 4 hours digging up a old tire thinking it was a pot fragment. Oof.

Read somewhere that even pros mess up like this sometimes. There's a famous story about a guy who spent weeks excavating what he thought was a Roman villa but it turned out to be a natural rock formation. Makes you feel a little better, right?
