The whole "Piltdown Man was a hoax" thing made me question every old artifact for years.
Found a genuine Roman coin at a local dig near Bath last spring that was almost too perfect, and it took carbon dating and a museum expert to convince me it wasn't fake. Anyone else ever look at a legit find and think "nope, that's got to be a tourist souvenir"?

The whole Piltdown thing gets thrown around like it proves every old find is fake. A Roman coin from Bath is pretty standard stuff, they turn up all the time in that area. A museum expert having to confirm it just seems like standard procedure, not some big crisis of faith. Found a medieval brooch once that looked too clean and it turned out to be a legit 14th century piece. Sometimes things survive in good shape, especially if they were buried in clay or a dry spot. Getting all shook over a coin that matches thousands of others feels like overthinking it.

That Roman coin example actually made me rethink how skeptical I was about clean finds.
