That dig in Ohio last month was a total disaster

I was part of a volunteer crew at a Hopewell site near Chillicothe and our trowels literally fell apart in the mud. The cheap metal handles snapped on three of them before noon. We ended up using sticks and spoons from the camp kitchen just to keep going. Has anyone else had equipment fail like that on a real excavation?

Total disaster" feels a little dramatic. Handles snapping on cheap trowels is annoying sure but sticks and spoons worked fine right? I've been on digs where we lost tools to weather and mud and you just roll with it. If the excavation itself was solid that's what counts.

Oh man, I totally feel you on this. Yeah, "total disaster" is a bit much (though I get why people get frustrated in the moment). I've been on digs where we lost half our stuff to a freak rainstorm and ended up scraping with tent stakes and old paint scrapers, which is honestly kind of hilarious looking back. The handles snapping thing is a pain, but a good stout stick or even a sturdy spoon will get the job done if you're careful. I think what matters is whether the team kept their heads down and got the context right despite the setbacks. That's the real win, you know?
