Serious question, I just read that the oldest known pair of pants is over 3,000 years old and was found in a Chinese tomb. Where do you even start preserving something like that?

Actually, the oldest pants we have are from around 3,300 years ago, but they were found in a tomb in western China, not broadly "Chinese." The people were likely herders from a different culture. The preservation is amazing because the site was very dry. They start by photographing everything in place before they even touch it. Then they use small tools to lift the fabric, often supporting it with special boards. It goes straight into a controlled box to keep it from falling apart.
